Poverty can be an endless cycle.
In Uganda, for example, a giant hurdle for a quality life is lack of education. Schooling, however, is not free in the country. Often, a parent who wasn’t afforded an education is unable to afford that for his or her children, and the cycle continues.
Generational poverty.
HEAL Ministries is a nonprofit organization that recognizes this cycle and works with moms to create a support system that gives them the freedom to pursue full-time employment and also provides education to their young children.
“Our childcare and preschool education program run 5 days a week,” said Betty Ross of HEAL. “We charge very little so that a single, abandoned, or widow mom can afford to put her child in our programs. Our educational and artisan programs for women equip these abandoned and widowed moms to learn a trade so they can become sustainable. We offer a variety of classes: English, Business, Advanced Business, a Village Bank program, a three-year-long Sewing class, Jewelry Design, Pottery, and Leatherworks.
The majority of the women HEAL serves live in Masese, one of the largest slums in Uganda.
“Life has not been easy for them,” Betty said. “The beautiful thing is that despite having hardly any worldly possessions and having to face many hardships that are hard to even begin to imagine, these women have Jesus and find immense joy in Him.”
HEAL Ministries previously received donated cloth diapers from the Little Bee Co, and is now under Jake’s Diapers’ wing as a Diaper Drop partner after we acquired the company’s mission. The diapers are essential in supporting these families and keeping them together.
“Disposable diapers are expensive in Uganda and we do not have the funding to purchase them,” Betty said. “The diapers you provide are amazing and help us save so much money; money that is going instead to empower the women and children we are serving to thrive.”
About Our Diaper Drop Partners
HEAL Ministries is just one of our partners featured in our 12 Drops of Christmas series. Jake’s Diapers aims to shed light on the stories of the people we serve to increase awareness about the impact a donation of hygiene products can have on a single individual.
Make your impact today! A donation of $16 solves diaper need for moms and babies like the ones in our story.
