They go hungry.

Many women and children in Carrefour, a “slum” just outside Port-au-Prince, Haiti, struggle with poverty and find themselves many days with little, if any, food available to eat.

“Women in the area are often single, unemployed and uneducated,” said Mickey McRoberts of Children’s Health Ministries. “With small children, they are not able to leave their homes to earn money. Life is very difficult and they often have little to no food to feed themselves or their children.”

CHM is an organization that focuses on malnutrition and well-baby care, including prenatal, breastfeeding & education. The group provides assistance for malnutrition, pneumonia, diarrhea and many other illnesses that could otherwise kill the children.

“Most of our moms have no money to pay for healthcare for their children and thus rarely take them to the doctor or hospital,” she said.

CHM signed up as a Diaper Drop partner with Jake’s Diapers, and together we’re preventing babies from sitting “bare bottomed” on a dirt floor, Mickey said.

“We have been able to provide reusable cloth diapers to many moms who would otherwise leave their babies bare bottomed sitting the dirt,” she said. “They simply cannot afford disposable diapers and cloth is very difficult to find or purchase for them.”
